I got my shiny Galaxy S last week and overall I'm very impressed. The only thing letting it down is Samsung appear to have installed a next to useless headset jack, unless you use their own one, or a pair of headphones (without a mic) I personally use the Bose In-Ear Mobile Headset which is basically their In-Ear headphones with a mic for hands free talking and a button for controlling certain features on your phone. I found that with this headset connected, the sound quality was poor - as if you were in a cave or something. Treble and bass were pretty much non existent and volume was low. Normal headphones seemed to work. After banging my head off a wall with Samsung and Bose, I got the thinking cap on and got the tools out. The solution is to chop the plug off the Samsung headset and the plug off the little 2.5mm - 3.5mm adaptor that came with the Bose headset and solder the two together (Samsung plug and Bose socket) For those in the same situation - The wire connections are gold to gold (earth), red to red (right), blue to green (left) and white to black (mic) - This may be different from cable to cable though. Both cables have a coating on the individual wires that needs to be burnt off before you reach the bare metal. I just heated it with the soldering iron and applied solder until it stuck. Once joined, I sealed it with a heat shrink tube to make it permanent. I realise most people will just use the supplied headset, or a normal pair of headphones. But I can't be the only one facing this issue! Hopefully Samsung will create an adaptor cable that does the same job as my home made effort, or start shipping their phones with a standard 4 pole headset jack. Craig |

Hi there Craig, that sounds like a bit of work in order to get your Bose headphones working as per normal. My other half has a Galaxy S and uses it to listen to music when she is running and has not encountered any problems with either the headphones or the sound quality from them. I have used another pair of headphones (Panasonic) in the Galaxy S and those seem to work ok too.
Still, it is a cracking phone though. SJ Forum Team |
